With a setting in the late 1930’s Dymphna Cusack takes her audience deeply into the world of a girls’ college, where three teachers attempt to defend a student allegedly engaging in ‘immoral behaviour’. The action takes place over a few days in the hotbed staffroom, at a time in society when dedicated women were booted out of the teaching profession if they married or if their slightest moral indiscretion set off a landslide of innuendo.
The play evokes strong emotions

Characters -
Miss Sheila Ray – youngest member of staff and a very nervous fragile girl

Miss Gwynn Carwithen – very attractive and bubbly and although young has been engaged for years.

Mrs MacNeil – she is attractive and ready for the new order seeing the deputy for her true colours

Miss Margaret Sole – sweet faced, dowdy but with an air of vitality she has been in the school for a while and is part of the ‘old guard’ – a ‘big’ character

Miss Charlotte Bates – “Batesy” to her friends, she is on the plump side, homely and likeable but an extreme gossip.

Miss Rose Hammond – another member of the old guard owing to longevity of tenure at the school, she is grim of face, masculine of dress and meticulous in “staff rules”

Miss Portia Kingsbury – The Deputy Headmistress who covets her position and relationship with the Head. She has great beauty and dignity, an exquisitely modulated voice and well chosen fashionable clothes.

Miss Dora Pearl – Miss Pearl is very feminine, faded and fluttery. She loves cooking and general home making but is often rather sickly.

Miss Woods – The Headmistress who is close to retirement and is really rather jaded by the changes which are rolling in on her school, her staff and her pupils.

Morning Sacrifice
The play is set in NSW circa late 30s/early 40s in the staff room of a government selective school for girls. It is the end of the school year, the inspectors are around and an indiscretion has taken place with one of the students!! Within the teaching staff there is great unrest with the old guard up against the vocal younger teachers. Times they are a’changing!
